Throughout the extensive and varied catalogue of characters actor Keanu Reeves has portrayed, one characteristic is consistent: a determination to save the world.
Indeed, from Neo in The Matrix to Ted Logan in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Keanu Reeves’ characters tend to possess a certain benevolence that has made him a favorite actor for some.
Despite being worth several hundred million dollars, Reeves has been known on multiple occasions to buck the “too famous to care” stereotype and help out the little guy.
Here are five amazing examples of him doing just that, many of which are gleaned from this reddit forum.
#1 – He once drove a woman 50 miles out of his way after her car broke down.
Reddit user lovemyax writes, “a friend of mine told me she was once stranded on the side of the highway outside LA when her jalopy broke down. She had no cell phone (that was before most people had cell phones) and no way to call for help. Then a nice black porsche pulls over and as you can guess, it was Keanu.”
The user continues, “he tried to help her jump start the car and when it didn’t work, he called AAA for her. When they towed her car, he offered her to drive her home, which she accepted. He drove about 50 miles out of his destination just to drive her home. She told me she hoped he would hit on her but he didn’t, he was just a gentleman, dropped her at her house, gave her his phone number and told her to call him if she needed further help.”
#2 – He gave $20,000 to a Matrix crew member he knew was having financial trouble.
Reddit user kahi writes, “a family friend builds movie sets, doesn’t design, is one of the poor dudes that just builds. Anyways he worked on the set for the Matrix and Keanu heard about family trouble he was having and gave him a $20,000 Christmas bonus to help him out.”
“He also was one of the only people on the set that genuinely wanted to know people’s names, would say hello and mean it, and would talk to people as they were his peers and not below him just because they were practically making nothing to build a set.”
#3 – He accepted lower pay for The Matrix on the condition that the money saved would go towards paying crew members properly.
Uproxx quotes prominent media journalist Roger Friedman as stating that Reeves graciously orchestrated a deal giving up some of his pay for for The Matrix series so that the movie crew could afford to stay with the franchise for all three instalments.
#4 – Reeves was once caught on camera giving up his seat on the subway for a woman.
First of all, how many famous people worth hundreds of millions of dollars have you ever seen on the subway – a mode of transportation even many modest middle class people loathe?
Second of all, what a gentleman.
#5 – Reeves once hung out with a homeless man on the streets of Hollywood.
According to The DeBrief, the year was 1997 and Reeves was at the peak of his popularity. While many celebrities would be – and are – egomaniacs at such a time, Reeves decided to spend some time hanging out, sharing food with and listening to a homeless guy on the streets of West Hollywood.
Is Keanu Reeves the coolest guy ever or what?
